If one more person said, "Oh my god, is that you, Milo?" he was going to kill them. It wasn't his fault he looked so different. The glasses were all his mother. Mel was to blame for his hair, and… okay, the rest was his fault. He had forgotten to take the stupid jewelry off, and he had been so busy moping and running errands, he'd forgotten to do laundry so he was stuck with the stupid purple polo. He was painfully aware he looked weird. People could stop pointing it out any time now.
At least Cheryl would probably be cool. He punched the button for the 22nd floor, stepped into the elevator, and played solitaire on his phone until the doors pinged open. Dropping off the blueprints he had been sent to deliver, he then took the elevator up to the 23rd floor.
He stopped a few paces from the doors, fussed with his hair and smoothed down his shirt, then pulled the bag off and just carried it so he didn't have the heavy, black strap cutting across his chest and looking sloppy. Ugh, idiot. It wasn't like he was going to run into Lewis. Milo hadn't even seen him except to wave since he'd dropped off the folder. Obviously things were going well with VanDeArgh.
Milo pressed the buzzer, then pulled the door open and stepped inside when it clicked. "Hey there, cutie," Cheryl said, waving at him. "Man, not having black eyes is totally an improvement, Alliance. You ready for lunch?"
"Yeah," Milo said.
"Cool. My replacement should be here in five minutes. How's life back at work?"
Milo rolled his eyes. "Work. But anything is better than still being IT."
Cheryl laughed. "Yeah, I bet. I thought about that sort of thing for about twenty seconds. Way less stressful doing reception."
"I believe it," Milo said.
"So what shall we do for lunch?" Cheryl asked. "Thai? Mexican? Sandwiches? Burgers?"
Milo shrugged. "I like it all."
"I just bet," Cheryl said with a grin. She giggled when his face went red. "You're too easy."
"You're a jerk."
"My boyfriend often says the same thing. I'm starting to think maybe you two shouldn't meet, I don't need—"
"Hey, Cheryl, Anna wanted me to tell you—" Lewis stopped. He stared at Milo, eyes wide for a moment before they narrowed. "Milo?"
Milo could feel his face turn even redder. Ugh, he hated his stupid genes. Why was Lewis staring so hard? Was that good staring? Bad staring? Oh, god, it was probably bad staring. "Hey, Lewy."
"What are you doing here?" Lewis asked, smiling.
Maybe it was good staring after all? Milo reached up to fuss with his glasses, caught himself, and shoved his hands into his pockets. "Cheryl and I are going to lunch."
"Oh," Lewis said, smile dropping. He sounded faintly annoyed as he asked, "Is this a gamer thing? Why haven't we ever done lunch?"
Milo shrugged, getting a bit annoyed himself now. "You always sound like you're busy all day long. And I figured all your lunches were reserved for VanDeNose these days.
